Let me get right to the point: The only way to get more out of life is to choose less.

Less stuff.

Less activity.

Less wanting more.

Less of you.

I apologize if this seems a little abrupt. Believe me, I searched for a different way to kick this off. I wanted to ease into the heavy stuff, to make it more palatable, less offensive. More than once I hit the delete button on a touching story because touching and heart warming didn’t quite fit. I also thought it might be easier if someone else hit you with the bad news. Maybe Saint Augustine wouldn’t insult you when he tells you all your priorities are wrong, that you’ve wasted your life in your pursuit of comfort and material goods. Perhaps you wouldn’t become angry if C.S. Lewis told you the frustration that fills your life will never go away until you slow down and begin saying no to yourself and your children. And if Mr. Rogers, yes, that Mr. Rogers, confronted you with your need to crawl out of the center of your universe and assume a lifestyle of humility, who could argue?

So I searched my library for just the right quote from one of my favorite authors. One or two came close, but I thought it better just to come right out and say what you and I need to hear: The key to making life matter is to choose to live with less.

From the Author

This book swirled around in my brain for five years before I finally chained myself to the keyboard and wrote it. And yes, I had to chain myself to the keyboard, although that was the last thing I expected. Going in I thought this would be an easy book to write. It wasn't. I think the reason is two fold. First, I had to make sure my own life came as close as possible to what I wanted to say. Believe me, choosing a smaller life of serving others doesn't come easy to me, either. I drool over the Best Buy ads just like every other gadget obsessed guy. However, I've found that choosing less truly does result in a life of more of what makes life worth living.

The second reason this book was hard to write had to do with the writing itself. I did not want this book to sound like I'd just spent six months locked away in a monastery somewhere. You don't need a book filled with pious tones and guilt inducing stories. I wanted Living with Less to have a real world feel to it. That's why the last section is called "Harder."

The book may have been difficult to write, but it was worth it. I hope you enjoy it.
